TRISO (TRi-structural ISOtropic) fuel is the world’s most advanced nuclear fuel. Each particle is a miniature powerhouse, with multiple protective layers that contain the fuel and fission products, delivering unmatched safety, reliability, and performance. TRISO is the foundation for advanced reactors on Earth and in space.

Kernel
The kernel is the heart of the fuel, where the uranium resides. It is a precisely engineered spherical core made of uranium compounds—typically a mixture of uranium oxide and uranium carbide—designed to efficiently generate energy through fission.

Buffer
Surrounding the kernel is a porous carbon buffer layer that absorbs mechanical and chemical stresses from fission. Like shock absorbers in a car, it protects the outer layers by smoothing out the intense conditions created during operation.

IPyC
The inner pyrolytic carbon layer is the first dense, impermeable ceramic barrier. It retains gaseous and solid fission products, preventing them from migrating outward.

SiC
The silicon carbide layer is the fuel's primary pressure vessel. This exceptionally strong ceramic forms an impenetrable barrier, stopping remaining fission products even under extreme temperatures and irradiation.

OPyC
The outer pyrolytic carbon layer protects the silicon carbide and maintains it under compressive stress—an ideal condition for ceramic materials—ensuring long-term structural integrity.
